Youngest Pakistani filmmaker to be part of over 10 feature films in Hollywood

At just 24 years old, Shahan Rao is reshaping Hollywood’s visual storytelling — a once-in-a-century Director of Photography redefining what’s possible behind the camera.

With his unique eye and leadership, Rao has already contributed to more than 10 major feature productions worldwide, proving that age is no barrier to mastering the art of cinematic vision.

Shahan Rao is a visionary Director of Photography whose extraordinary talent and creative leadership have rapidly propelled him to the forefront of Hollywood cinematography. Born and raised in Pakistan, Rao began his journey behind the camera at just 13 years old, shooting documentaries across seven countries and honing a unique visual style that blends painterly composition with kinetic intimacy. Transitioning from still photography to motion pictures, he has developed a rare combination of technical mastery and artistic sensitivity that distinguishes his work in the highly competitive U.S. film industry.

In the competitive landscape of Hollywood filmmaking, the Director of Photography (DP) stands as the single most critical creative position on any production after the director. Shahan Rao, at just 24 years old, has distinguished himself as one of the most talented and sought-after DPs in the industry today — a position that industry insiders describe as “once-in-a-hundred-years” talent due to his extraordinary instinct, artistic vision, and technical mastery.

The DP is responsible for shaping the entire visual identity of a film, making creative decisions that affect every frame — from lighting, composition, camera movement, to color grading. Rao leads large, multi-departmental crews, working directly alongside directors to translate story into powerful images that resonate emotionally with audiences. His role is not only technical but deeply artistic, serving as the visual architect of each production’s soul.

Rao’s responsibilities on every project extend far beyond operating the camera or managing lighting. He commands the set’s visual language and ensures seamless integration of all visual elements to serve the story’s emotional core. His leadership and creative input often define the overall cinematic experience, marking the DP as indispensable and the foremost creative collaborator after the director.

Since relocating to the United States, Rao has played this leading role as Director of Photography on multiple significant U.S.-based productions, including the critically acclaimed Nebuchadnezzar, 40 Days, Pieces of Two, and the award-recognized Generation Wells.

•              Nebuchadnezzar — This film was spotlighted at the Julian Dubuque Film Festival and nominated at the prestigious Yorkton Film Festival, one of North America’s longest-running and most respected festivals. Rao’s visionary cinematography contributed to the film’s emotional resonance and visual storytelling, elevating its profile among industry professionals and audiences alike.

•              Generation Wells — Garnering multiple festival honors including the SoCal Film Awards, The International Indie Film & Screenplay Festival (team semifinalist), Oniros Film Awards in New York, and the T.I.F.A – Tietê International Film Awards, where Rao is potentially nominated for Best Cinematographer. The film is also officially selected at the Indie Shorts Film Festival and the LA Shorts Film Festival — an Oscar and BAFTA qualifying festival — with its official public screening scheduled for July 27, 2025. Rao’s cinematography plays a pivotal role in shaping the film’s distinctive atmosphere and immersive experience, further cementing his reputation for excellence in short-form storytelling.

•              40 Days — Directed by Peter Takla and produced by Media Avenue Studios, this feature film secured international distribution prior to the completion of post-production, underscoring its commercial potential and high-profile backing. Rao led the cinematography team, orchestrating complex lighting setups and ensuring visual coherence across diverse shooting locations, critical to delivering the film’s intense emotional tone.

•              Pieces of Two — A U.S.-based production showcasing Rao’s ability to craft intimate and evocative visuals, Pieces of Two reflects his skill at balancing narrative depth with cinematic style, solidifying his leadership role behind the camera.

Beyond feature films, Rao has contributed to numerous U.S.-based short films and high-profile music videos, including a recent deal with Sony, further showcasing his versatility and leadership in the American film industry.

Rao has been a key creative contributor to over 10 award-winning projects, a testament to both the quality and impact of his work across diverse formats and genres.

Rao is currently in potential talks with Media Avenue Studios for their second comedy film Falafel, which appears to be a sequel to their successful Husband for Sale. This collaboration, if finalized, will further cement Rao’s ongoing relationships with reputable studios and expand his impact within Hollywood’s commercial and narrative film sectors.

Rao’s artistry and leadership have earned him notable recognition, including being shortlisted as the Emerging Cinematographer of 2024 by the Academy of Motion Pictures — an accolade awarded only to the most promising and influential cinematographers globally. This honor places Rao among the elite emerging talents shaping the future of cinematic storytelling.

Raised in Pakistan during a peak period for documentary filmmaking, Rao cultivated a unique visual style blending painterly composition with kinetic intimacy, developed through international documentary projects starting at age 13. His empathetic leadership on set fosters collaboration, innovation, and precision, ensuring every project benefits from his narrative-driven visual approach.

Looking ahead, Rao is set to collaborate with acclaimed filmmaker Tony Schwartz on Ghost Machine in 2025 and has secured a prominent contract with Sony for an upcoming music video, underscoring his growing influence and demand in major U.S. and international productions.

In sum, Shahan Rao’s role as Director of Photography is undeniably the most important creative position on set after the director. His rapid career ascent, extraordinary talent, and critical contributions to distinguished U.S.-based projects continue to shape Hollywood’s visual landscape, making him a global exemplar of artistic excellence at an exceptionally young age.
